It is only recently that I have started buying organic ginger and now won’t go back to non-organic. The colour and taste are more intensive, and you really can taste the power of the ginger with the organic.
I highly recommend using organic ginger. It makes a huge difference to the taste but also has many more nutrients.
Asian cuisine has been flavouring with ginger since ancient times. Its medicinal properties have been touted for nearly as long. The knobby bulb ginger causes superficial blood vessels to dilate so that at first you perspire and then feel cool. This makes ginger a good food to ingest if you have a fever.
One thing that is often not mentioned when saying the benefits of Ginger is that it is a good source of Manganese. Manganese, as research shows, is very good for human health. It is a mineral vital for good health and plays a role in normal brain functioning, bone development, reproductive health, and glucose metabolism. As a compound of the antioxidant enzyme, it scavenges free radicals and promotes cell health.
Ginger is delicious mixed with apple juice and may aid in healing vocal cords if you have laryngitis. It also acts as an expectorant, helping clear sinus cavities of mucus and the lungs of phlegm. Drink ginger and carrot juice often, and especially if you feel a cold coming on. My go-to recipe with any cold is blending or juicing a whole lemon, several turmeric bulbs, and a large piece of ginger root. It’s also good to add an orange squeezed into this mixture. It blows your socks off and definitely rids you of any oncoming cold.
Ginger should be stored in a cool, dry place as you would garlic. Do not refrigerate it. If the skin seems especially tough, peel the ginger before juicing or blending.
Blending
I want to start including recipes which you can make in your blender or NutriBullet, which have similar nutritional ingredients as my juices and taste just as fabulous.
Here is the first of many to follow:
Featured Recipe: Ginger Avocado Smoothie
Preparation
Wash ingredients in bicarbonate of soda or vegetable wash. Recent research indicates that a baking soda wash is the most effective way to remove pesticides from fruit and vegetables without peeling them, and it is very economical. Keep in mind this doesn’t remove pesticides that have penetrated the fruit or vegetable skin, which is why buying organic is best, although I understand it is not always possible.
Ingredients
- 1 avocado (your choice of half or whole)
- 1 pear
- Chunk of organic ginger (peeled)
- A few sprigs of dill
- A few sprigs of coriander
- 8 leaves of fresh spinach
- 1 lime, peeled but leave the pith
- 1 cucumber
- Filtered water (see below)
Not all of the ingredients will fit in your blender in one go, so blend in two batches. First the lime, pear, cucumber and avocado, then the rest of the ingredients. Add filtered water until you reach a fluid drinkable consistency. The amount of filtered water is your personal preference, but remember you can’t take it out, so go slowly and top up if needed.
Once all blended, add both batches to a jug and enjoy!
